Cultivating Creativity and Connection: The Impact of Sound Young Minds at Lavender Walk
Music plays a vital role in the arts program at Lavender Walk Adolescent Unit, and the partnership with City of London Sinfonia (CLS) through Sound Young Minds projects has significantly enriched the experience for our young people.
These workshops provide a safe and stimulating creative space where students can explore new ways of musical expression alongside professional CLS orchestral musicians and Open Academy Fellows. This collaboration fosters growth both musically and socially, not just for the students, but also for teaching staff and ward staff.
The impact of Sound Young Minds extends beyond the workshops themselves. The recent "Coming in from the Cold" soundwalk project is a prime example. Working with Jackie Walduck and CLS musicians, young people created original compositions inspired by the cold weather. This innovative work has been geolocated in a nearby garden, allowing anyone to access and enjoy the music simply by taking a walk with a smartphone.
Through these projects, Sound Young Minds provides a platform for young people at Lavender Walk to discover their creative potential, build meaningful connections, and leave a lasting impact on their community.
