PERSONAL HEALTH AND SOCIAL EDUCATION

phse2.gifAll students have access to a broad range of educational experiences relating to personal and emotional development. We work closely with parents, governors and the multi-disciplinary team to develop a curriculum that helps support our students to grow and develop in our complex society. Citizenship is addressed in all areas of the curriculum. Drama, circle time, social skills, discussion group and Religious Education focus on developing self esteem and awareness of others. Parents are informed about our sex education curriculum on an individual basis. Education on drugs is planned in conjunction with the community health education team.

The aim of our Relationships and Sex Education policy is to give our young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds. We aim to enable them to identify and understand what healthy communication and interactions look like as well as including what makes a good friend/colleague. It will also cover contraception, intimacy and the intricacies surrounding pressure to have sex. It will teach pupils what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour amongst people and help them to understand the positive effects that good relationships have on their mental wellbeing as well as identify when these are not right and understand how such situations can be managed. Sexual health will also be taught as well as sexual orientation and gender identity. There will be teaching about the importance of safety online and how to navigate staying safe in a digital world. All these topics will be taught by our highly qualified teaching staff with the utmost of sensitivity to each individual pupil. Parents will be informed of the topics we teach and have the right to withdraw in special circumstances - apart from the sexual health content within the statutory science curriculum - along with the approval of the headteacher.

A dog, a cat, two guinea pigs, a chameleon and a snake

Today Ava was very happy to see our lovely head teacher, Janette, in her online lesson. She was also delighted to meet Janette's animals - a dog, a cat, two guinea pigs, a chameleon and a snake! Ava laughed a lot when the chameleon sat on Janette's head! What a great way to end another week of school.
