Thank you for the invaluable music session you organised for the children on Great Western Ward at St Mary's Paddington which my daughter was able to attend. Although my daughter was on the ward for a while her session with Mark and Vanessa from LSO was absolutely wonderful and a real life line for her whilst being so poorly. She has talked of it often and it has provided real inspiration in as much as she is now improvising on our piano at home and I will arrange lessons for her soon. Thank you very much indeed and I sincerely hope you can secure additional funding for further arts and music activities for the children which I feel are so essential for their recovery and well being. Brian - Musician

Hello Brian, what do you do at the Hospital School?

I am a musician and magician and I appear three times a week teaching through sound, songs and stories and then disappear with a smile. I work on the wards, general to intensive care, with the children, their families, and friends as well as in the schoolroom supporting the teachers.

What are the special things about working at the Hospital School?

The 'support and experience' we all share combining education, creativity and care with Children Patients, Nurses, Volunteers, Teachers, Admin, Cleaners, Preachers, Passers-by and many MANY more! We meet a lot of people from all over the world in different roles and circumstances from Tipperary to Timbuktu, and everyone senses the school is a place for children in hospital to rest, relax , feel safe, meet new people and experience creative learning opportunities. We also encourage the movement of anxieties, enabling children to focus on building self and social confidence through learning, sharing knowledge and improving understanding of every subject the teachers cover in the Curriculum, for themselves and with others. We hope the children leave the Hospital School healthier and wiser, more confident in themselves and more aware of other’s feelings, sharing the same journey with a raised sense of togetherness through school learning, inspired to return to their home school and carry on learning from new and past experiences.

And finally a fact about yourself that we didn’t know before?

I have kept two goldfish, Jaws and Kip, for seventeen years and have trained them to sing and swim underwater at the same time. The fact they remember the lyrics proves goldfish have better memories than they are stereotyped to hold. I am in talks with a TV company and hope to prove to the world, my fish will be the first of many, one day there may even be an orchestra. Our school started small to today’s amazing role in Hospital Schools here and in the wider world and I know Janette our Head Teacher and the whole CCHS team will be keen to support my project.
