Chelsea Community Hospital School has extended their provision to include children at The Portland Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic. Children at these hospitals can now access the full range of teaching provision offered by our teachers, minimising the disruption that ill health has on these children’s schooling and academic progress.

Claire Dunsterville, Head of Therapy and Rehabilitation at The Portland says: ‘We are delighted to be working with CCHS to provide an on-site school service at The Portland Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic”.

“We are the first private hospital group to provide a Hospital School Service. Adding education to our range of therapy and support services ensures that we are supporting the well-being of children in every way throughout their stay in our hospital”.

Janette Steel, the CCHS Principal says “Research shows that children not only get better more quickly if they have access to education in hospital but they also have a smoother transition back into life at home and school”.

Two teachers, Karima and Helen, provide one to one sessions with children at their bedsides from Monday to Friday. They are helped by our Maths teacher Marius and our English teacher Laura. Teaching is tailored to the individual child, from supporting children with SEN to helping them revise for SATS and GCSEs. We also have plans to set up classrooms in the hospitals so children can learn together.

Teacher Helen Williams says: “We teach children receiving all kinds of medical treatment, from those who are in hospital for just a few days to children with cancer or neurological conditions. Each child undergoes an assessment and we come up with a teaching programme which takes into account their literacy, numeracy and language skills”.
