firebirdYasmin and Shakwarn worked with musicians Julian, Jackie and Kate from Wigmore Hall to create compositions based on The Firebird by Stravinsky. We used pictures of the Firebird and Kastchei to create pieces of music to represent these two characters, all connected by seven repeated chords, (Stravinsky loved using odd numbers: particularly 7, 11, 13).

The Firebird is a Russian folk tale about a Prince who discovers a marvelous bird of flaming red and gold. He chases it intending to catch it but only succeeds in taking one of it's feathers. The chase has taken him into the garden of King Kastchei The Immortal who attempts to catch the Prince and turn him to stone. The 13 captive princesses try to save the Prince and then he uses the feather to summon the Firebird to save them all. The Firebird breaks the spell and makes Kastchei and his army dance faster and faster eventually making the evil kingdom vanish.
